Firefly Aerospace (FLY) has finalized arrangements for two Alpha rocket missions departing from Swedish territory, entering into a multi-mission contract with SSC Space to operate from the Esrange Space Center located in northern Sweden.
Shares of FLY were down 0.59% when the partnership was publicly disclosed.
Both launches are planned for 2028 or later. The missions will accommodate Swedish national defense payloads alongside commercial rideshare opportunities.
According to the arrangement, SSC Space has reserved complete payload capacity on both flights. The company will then distribute this capacity among its government partners and commercial clients.
This partnership comes after substantial infrastructure development at Esrange Space Center. Completed facilities include a mission control center, payload preparation building, launch vehicle assembly structure, tracking infrastructure, and secure storage units.
Construction of the actual launch pad at Launch Complex 3C remains in progress. Both organizations are collaborating to complete this critical component.

Jason Kim, CEO of Firefly, stated the agreement “validates the demand from European customers for long-awaited orbital launch capabilities directly from mainland Europe.”

This collaboration extends previous work establishing the necessary transatlantic regulatory infrastructure required for Alpha launches from European territory.

SSC Space manages Esrange Space Center in Sweden’s northern region and maintains a worldwide commercial ground station network supporting satellite communications. The organization employs approximately 750 people with operations spanning every continent.
Firefly Aerospace began operations in 2017. The company maintains its engineering, production, and testing operations in central Texas.
Alpha represents Firefly’s small-to-medium class orbital launch system. Establishing operations from mainland Europe provides customers with additional geographic flexibility for reaching particular orbital inclinations.
This contract establishes Esrange as a candidate location for European orbital operations, advancing a long-term continental objective.
Both scheduled missions will transport combined government and commercial cargo, with SSC Space managing payload assignments for each flight.
Completing Launch Complex 3C pad construction represents the critical remaining step before the 2028 launch timeline can be realized.
