On Friday, September 11, Tesla announced its Model Y Performance variant for the Chinese market through a Weibo post. The electric crossover carries a starting price of 369,000 yuan (roughly $54,450) and is slated for delivery within a two-to-six-week timeframe.

This high-performance configuration accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, achieves a maximum speed of 250 km/h, and delivers a CLTC-rated range of 659 kilometers. The Performance model now represents the most expensive among five Model Y variants available in China, commanding a 30,000 yuan premium compared to the six-passenger Model Y L configuration.

Distinguished by its aerodynamically optimized front and rear bumpers, carbon-fiber rear spoiler, 21-inch Arachnid 2.0 alloy wheels, and red-painted brake calipers, the Performance edition also showcases carbon-fiber interior accents and ventilated front sport seats equipped with power-adjustable thigh support.

The vehicle accommodates DC fast charging at rates up to 250 kilowatts, adding approximately 250 kilometers of range during a 15-minute charging session. However, this capability trails several domestic Chinese competitors, some of which advertise 500 kilometers of range replenishment in merely 10 minutes.

Documentation filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in July preceded this launch. Technical specifications revealed a 78.4-kWh battery pack utilizing cells manufactured by LG Energy Solution’s Chinese division, paired with dual motors generating 176 kW at the front axle and 291 kW at the rear.

Weakening Sales Momentum

The rollout of this performance-oriented model comes as Model Y sales face headwinds in the Chinese market. August deliveries totaled 29,260 vehicles, representing a 25.8% year-over-year contraction and extending a declining trend now spanning three consecutive months. The downturn has accelerated progressively, beginning with a 13.8% decrease in June, followed by an 18.2% decline in July.

Through the first eight months of 2026, Tesla delivered 226,931 Model Y units in China, reflecting a 6.1% year-over-year reduction. The company’s total Chinese market deliveries decreased 12.4% to 316,251 vehicles during this same timeframe.

With the Model Y representing over 70% of Tesla’s total Chinese deliveries year-to-date, the vehicle’s sales trajectory remains pivotal to the automaker’s regional performance.

Incentives and Market Dynamics

Aiming to accelerate end-of-quarter deliveries, Tesla revealed on September 7 that Chinese customers purchasing eligible Model Y inventory vehicles with delivery completion by September 30 would benefit from a 10,000 yuan price reduction applied to their final payment.

Domestic automakers including BYD continue broadening their product portfolios, presenting consumers with an expanding array of choices across multiple price segments. BYD’s ultra-fast charging technology also surpasses the charging capabilities available on Tesla’s newly introduced Model Y Performance.

According to TipRanks, TSLA stock holds a Moderate Buy consensus rating derived from 11 Buy recommendations, 12 Hold ratings, and 3 Sell ratings.
