A former Georgia banker has been charged with helping siphon $931,500 from customer accounts into cryptocurrency wallets.
Federal prosecutors say Mercedes Henry, 35, of Stone Mountain, was arrested Friday after a grand jury in Atlanta returned an indictment last week.
Prosecutors say Henry worked as a universal banker at multiple Ameris Bank locations in the Atlanta area in 2021. Ameris is a regional bank based in Georgia with $27.5 billion in assets under management.
On at least six occasions between September of 2021 and November of 2021, she allegedly took account numbers and identifiers from six customers and used that data to link their Ameris accounts to Coinbase accounts controlled by co-conspirators.
The transfers moved about $931,500 from Ameris Bank to those Coinbase wallets. Henry allegedly received more than $1,000 for her role.
Says U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg,
“Henry allegedly stole sensitive information to facilitate nearly $1 million of fraudulent transfers from victims’ bank accounts to cryptocurrency accounts controlled by her co-conspirators. We will work with our partners in law enforcement and the private sector to identify, arrest, and punish greedy criminals who lie, cheat, and steal to enrich themselves.”
Henry faces charges of bank fraud, access device fraud and bribery. An indictment is only an accusation, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Officials have not named the co-conspirators or said whether any of the funds have been recovered.
