I’m helping a friend recover BTC that has been untouched since around 2018.
He originally used someone else’s first-generation Coldcard to set up the wallet. He isn’t tech-savvy and doesn’t remember the exact procedure.
He still has a USB flash drive, a handwritten 12-word sequence, a 6-digit PIN, and an old receiving address that he last checked in 2020.
I’m wondering whether the 12 words might be an encrypted Coldcard backup password rather than the actual BIP39 seed phrase.
Does anyone here have experience with the original Coldcard Mk1 from 2018?
I’d particularly like to know whether backups from that era can be restored on modern hardware without the original device, and how to identify the backup format safely.
The goal is to restore access and move the BTC to a new hardware wallet.
We’re not sharing any private information or looking for recovery services. Just hoping someone can point us toward reliable technical documentation.
Thanks!
