The personal, financial and medical records of tens of thousands of patients may be in the hands of hackers after a cyberattack on a Florida skin care practice.
The Orlando-based Mid Florida Dermatology & Plastic Surgery says an unauthorized party may have copied information from its systems between March 26th and March 30th.
The practice, which runs 33 offices across central Florida, reported the breach to the US Department of Health and Human Services on May 1st as affecting roughly 85,585 people, reports Claim Depot.
The ransomware group Qilin claimed responsibility for the attack on a dark web post on April 25th.
The company says it spotted unusual activity on March 30th and finished reviewing the affected files on August 31st.
The exposed information varies by person but may include names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers and Medicare numbers.
Financial account numbers, account access information, health insurance details and medical information may also be involved.
Mid Florida Dermatology is mailing notice letters to affected patients and says anyone who doesn’t get one can call its assistance line at 1-877-344-1677 to check whether they were impacted.
The practice is urging patients to review account statements, explanation of benefits forms and credit reports for suspicious activity.
