Longtime OpenAI Executive Departs After Eight Years To Launch New Venture

A longtime executive at the prominent artificial intelligence company OpenAI is departing after eight years to pursue a new venture.

Brad Lightcap announced his exit on X amid ongoing leadership transitions as the firm seeks to justify its $852 billion valuation ahead of an expected initial public offering.

Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and built the first versions of key operations and business teams, including Finance, Legal, People, CorpSec, GTM/Gov, and Partnerships.

Over an 18-month stretch through mid-2025, he grew the go-to-market team from around 50 to more than 700 people.

Lightcap served as operating chief until April, when he shifted to a special projects role, with chief revenue officer Denise Dresser taking over most of his responsibilities.

He shared his decision in a lengthy message to the team.

“It is bittersweet to share that I’ll be moving on from OpenAI to start something new. I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent most of the last decade pursuing our mission and building this company. Sitting here today, mission success feels within sight. It has been the honor of my life to help bring us to this point, and to do it alongside all of you.”

CEO Sam Altman responded publicly with thanks for Lightcap’s contributions since the early days.

“Thank you for everything! I very fondly remember our earliest conversations about OpenAI, when it sounded totally crazy, and you were one of the few people that got it. Since then, you have taken on any function and challenge OpenAI has needed; we would not be where we are without you. excited to work together on what’s next.”

Lightcap noted he will remain available for the next few weeks to support the team and is not going far.
