Bank of America Customer Loses Nearly $6,000 After Scammers Posing As In-House Fraud Investigators Contact Her

A Bank of America customer has lost nearly $6,000 after scammers posing as bank fraud investigators and an FBI agent talked her into withdrawing cash and delivering it in a parking lot.

The Florida resident, identified as Susan Trupiano, says the scheme started with a text and a follow-up call from someone claiming to represent Bank of America’s fraud department, reports Gulf Coast News Now.

The callers said they were working with the FBI to probe her local branch and told her they needed her help testing whether a teller was committing fraud.

Says Trupiano,

“Well, little did I know, that was my money they took. They told me they were depositing $6,000, and they wanted me to take $5,500 out because they wanted to make sure that the teller wasn’t committing fraud.”

She was then told to meet a supposed FBI agent in a parking lot, open the back door of a car, and leave the cash on the back seat without speaking to anyone inside.

After she returned home, Trupiano found she was locked out of her banking app and realized her phone had been compromised.

“They hacked my phone, and that’s where all my information was.”

Lee County deputies have been contacted about the case, and no arrests have been reported.

Trupiano says she hopes her story warns others to verify bank and law-enforcement contacts on their own before handing over cash.
