A Wyoming bookkeeper has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison after stealing $1,484,104.80 from a family hospitality business while working remotely from Hawaii.
Laura Marie Means, 46, formerly of Jackson, must also serve three years of supervised release, reports County 17.
U.S. District Judge Alan B. Johnson ordered her to pay $1,484,104.80 in restitution to her former employer and $355,875.32 to the IRS.
Means was hired in late 2015 as the sole bookkeeper for a prominent Jackson family business that owned lodging and hospitality properties.
After moving to Hawaii in 2019, she kept the remote role and diverted funds by altering QuickBooks entries to hide transfers into her personal accounts, the Department of Justice said.
The scheme ran from February of 2019 through September of 2025 and included duplicate salary payments, unearned bonuses and an unapproved bank account.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Amanda Koldjeski addressed the case.
“Laura Means abused her position as bookkeeper to siphon money from her employer’s business to line her own pockets. Her scheme impacted the business and was devastating to the victims who considered her part of their family.”
Means pleaded guilty in July of 2026 to wire fraud and filing a false tax return.
She must self-surrender on December 2nd.
