Michigan Caregiver Arrested After Allegedly Draining Nearly $24,000 From 86-Year-Old Livonia Client

A Michigan caregiver has been arrested after an 86-year-old Livonia woman and her family say the aide stole nearly $24,000 through repeated ATM withdrawals and unauthorized credit card charges.

Livonia police took the woman into custody early Tuesday afternoon, reports ClickOnDetroit.

Police have not named the caregiver because she has not yet been charged.

Cynthia Dame, 86, said the caregiver began working for her in July of 2025 and quickly became someone the family trusted with shopping, cooking, laundry and caring for her animals.

Says Dame,

“She could look in my face and sit here and talk to me… while she’s taking my money out of my money machine. I think she’s a witch.”

Dame alleged the caregiver took her ATM card from her wallet, withdrew $500 before arriving for a shift, then returned after leaving work and took more.

She also said her mailed bank statements began disappearing.

Daughter Constance Wisniewski said the family had even helped the caregiver financially during a divorce, including a roughly $4,000 gift and $100 a week on top of her pay.

Wisniewski said her sister later spotted a long line of $500 ATM withdrawals on Dame’s linked account, then found the card missing from Dame’s purse.

When confronted, Wisniewski said the caregiver admitted taking money, insisted it was not that much and offered to pay it back.

The family also says it found credit card charges they believe were unauthorized, including groceries and other personal items.

Says Capt. Eric Marcotte,

“We take this very seriously and make sure we investigate these crimes to the fullest extent. It’s shameful to prey on the elderly when they are at their most vulnerable. We take it to heart and make sure these people are held accountable for their alleged crimes.”
