FINMA Approves Switzerland’s First Retail Spot Bitcoin ETF

Switzerland’s Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) approved the country’s first exchange-traded fund for retail investors that invests directly in Bitcoin on 20 October 2026. The approval clears the regulatory path for BIT Asset Management’s Bitcoin Fund ETF, trading under the ticker BBIT, which the issuer expects to begin trading on SIX Swiss Exchange in November 2026.

BBIT targets a November SIX debut

BIT Asset Management identified the authorised product as the Bitcoin Fund ETF, or BBIT. The company said the fund is expected to start trading on SIX Swiss Exchange in November 2026, giving the approval a defined, though still prospective, market launch timetable.

FINMA described its decision as approval of Switzerland’s first retail ETF investing directly in Bitcoin. The regulator’s announcement and the issuer’s product identification establish BBIT as the vehicle covered by the decision, rather than a general authorisation for retail crypto products.

Alternative-investment classification

FINMA classified the fund under Swiss law as an “other fund for alternative investments” with particular risk and granted it an exemption from applicable diversification rules.

The classification places the product within Switzerland’s alternative-investment framework. It is a retail fund with direct Bitcoin exposure, rather than a conventional broadly diversified retail fund, and FINMA did not present the authorisation as eliminating the associated risks for retail investors.

FINMA said retail access is subject to safeguards addressing custody and operational risks. Those requirements are especially relevant to a vehicle holding Bitcoin directly, where handling and control of the underlying asset form part of the fund’s operational risk profile.

Custody, disclosure and sales safeguards

FINMA said retail access is subject to safeguards addressing custody and operational risks. Those requirements are especially relevant for a vehicle holding Bitcoin directly, where the handling and control of the underlying asset are part of the fund’s operational risk profile.

The regulator also required clear risk disclosures and point-of-sale conduct rules under Switzerland’s Financial Services Act. The disclosure and sales conditions mean BBIT’s retail availability will be accompanied by requirements intended to ensure investors receive risk information and that conduct standards apply when the product is offered.

For now, the next concrete milestone is the expected November trading start on SIX Swiss Exchange, as stated by BIT Asset Management. No precise launch date was included in the materials announcing the approval.
