When is the next Bitcoin halving?

The block reward halves every 210,000 blocks. The next halving is at block 1,050,000. The date is an estimate: it takes the blocks remaining and multiplies by the average block time over the last 2,016 blocks (the most recent difficulty period), measured from block timestamps. Blocks arrive faster or slower than the ten minute target depending on mining power, so the date moves by days as the halving approaches. Past halving dates in the table are the dates of the halving blocks themselves.

What a halving does

Miners earn a block reward in newly issued bitcoin plus transaction fees. Each halving cuts the new issuance in half, which slows the rate at which new coins enter circulation. It doesn't change the 21 million cap. Fees become a larger share of miner income over time; you can see current rates on the Bitcoin fees page.

If you plan to hold through the cycle, keeping coins on a hardware wallet such as Ledger keeps the keys in your hands.
